Social media posting automation outage - 4th July 2026 to 4th September 2026

Incident Report for Open Research Calendar

Resolved

From approximately 4 July 2026, the automation responsible for posting newly submitted Open Research Calendar events to social media channels, including LinkedIn, Bluesky, and Mastodon, stopped running.

Events submitted during this period were still added automatically to the calendar and stored correctly in the Open Research Calendar database. The issue affected only the downstream social media posting automation. There was no impact on the correctness or completeness of events included in the monthly newsletter, which is generated directly from the active database.

The failure occurred silently, with no automated notification sent to the team maintaining the system. No user reports or GitHub issues were received about the problem; it was identified during routine system checks.

After the issue was identified, the fault was corrected, and the outstanding social media posts for affected events were published on 4 September 2026. Automatic social media posting has now resumed.

The exact cause of the automation being disabled is unknown. Due to the age of the fault, detailed logs from the time it began are no longer available.
